REUNIONS
It's unclear what the catalyst was - perhaps it was th fact that we were now in the 21st century (somrthing that seemed a long way away back in Drayton Bridge Road in 1963), perhaps it was the wave of "reunion fever" arising from the "Friends Reunited" web site (it seemed to generate enormous publicity), or perhaps it was the realisation that most of us would be hitting our 50th birthdays... Whatever the cause, ex-Draytonians (not just from the 1963 intake, but also younger whippersnappers from 1967 and 1970) began re-establishing contact via the Internet in 2001. Many familiar names appeared on the relevant "Friends Reunited" link page, and in a number of cases those who dared contact one another via e-mail were also in cintact with others via other means. In December 2001, Paul Curtis and Allan Palmer met with John Winnert down in the New Forest. John had kept in touch with a number of reprobates (otherwise known as ex-Draytonians) over the years and they had usually had a small annual gathering. With the renewed interest, John suggested that a Reunion of the 1963 intake (together with any other ex-Draytonian) be staged in 2002 to celebrate old times and the dreaded 50th birthdays. Using "Friends Reunited" and the "DMGS'63" web site set up by Allan, the details of this event were communicated to as many former school friends as could contacted. With use of the Internet this included people in many countries, not just the U.K. With thanks to the generous provision of a venue and facilities by John and his wife Norma, a splendid July weekend in 2002 saw a collection of 50 year olds wandering round John's house saying "Don't tell me, you must be..." or "Gosh, you haven't changed at all..." or "Do you remember when..." Repeat events took place in 2003, 2004 and 2005. |
